Ghost Series, a limited edition collection produced by Stockholm-based designers HAHA Studio in response to Relay’s invitation to produce a work experimenting with a new material, process or format.

Accepting the invitation to take part in the second commissioning round by Relay Design Projects, HAHA Studio chose to explore aluminium milling, in particular, the ghost-like surface marks left behind by the milling head. Inspired by a prototype created for a previous project, the team saw the potential for pattern-making. The broad design is created by HAHA, however the movement of the drill from points A to B is determined by the software, factoring in efficiency and speed. Ghost Series focuses on this relationship between the designer and the machine, a collaboration to choreograph movement and pattern across the surface.

The result is a limited edition of mono-material wall lamps, floor lamps and stools whose smooth surfaces contain the trace marks from the milling head. The patterns on these recycled aluminium objects are reminiscent of Art Deco and retro-futuristic motifs.

HAHA studio is the Stockholm-based design practice founded by Arash Eskafi and Yujin Chiang in 2015. Hailing from different cultures— Scandinavia and East Asia— the studio is in constant search of what can be understood by all of us, like laughter. HAHA relies on fundamental shapes, choice materials, and universal truths to design their iconic work. To create objects that all of us have an instinctive response to, HAHA works hand in hand with craftspeople in Sweden and Taiwan. The practice designs lighting fixtures, accessories, limited editions, and undertakes regular collaborations in interior architecture.
