Stack is a limited edition table designed by British Architects EBBA in response to Relay’s invitation to produce a work experimenting with a new material, process or format.

The commission to produce new work for Relay Design Projects began with a residency at Rochester Square, arranged & funded by Relay. The residency focused on exploring the possibilities of using ceramics in EBBA’s practice, a new material for the studio.

Out of this residency, EBBA produced Stack - a coffee table which utilises stacking ceramic forms to create a flexible design centred around a ribbed oak table surface. This machined surface playfully references the architectural facades of EBBA’s work whilst creating a bold surface for interlocking trays to slide across the tabletop.

The design explores low furniture forms of East Asia. The cast ceramic legs suspend the table low above the ground. However, EBBA were keen to provide a playful flexibility, allowing the table surface to be placed directly on the floor. In this scenario, the surface performs more like a rug with the ceramic legs stacked to create side tables or stools. Their milled wood lids double as trays that slide across the ribbed table surface.
